Did you know that team building activities can actually help to boost your bottom line?
In the salon industry, we’re used to being customer-facing. We tend to focus more on how we treat the customers than how we treat our coworkers!
Creating an environment where everyone feels respected and connected increases employee motivation. You’ll see the improvement in sales and service in no time!
Read on for our favorite salon games that will boost morale and remind your employees of why they love working at your salon!
Technique Trivia
Technique trivia is a great game to play after attending a conference or conducting a meeting about new trends and techniques that will be used in the salon. You can go the Jeopardy route of dividing questions into topics or head straight for the old-fashioned question and answer game!
In order to get people working together, divide your hairdressers into two or three teams. Make sure you switch up the teams each time you play! Reward the winning team with a nice lunch out or a trip to the spa.
Morning Dance-Off
Not everyone is bright and chipper in the morning. When half of your hairdressers aren’t quite awake yet, it can change the vibe of the entire room when you open.
To get everyone smiling and alert, start the morning with a dance-off! Ask your hairdressers to take turns selecting a song. Then, pick two hairdressers each morning to lead the dance-off!
The idea is that each hairdresser starts doing a dance move that can be as complicated, simple, or silly as they want. Everyone else can decide which hairdresser to follow along in the dance. The hairdresser with the most backup dancers by the end of the song wins!
Giving out a prize every morning may be overkill. Instead, just use this game as a way to start off the day on the right foot! After all, dancing is scientifically proven to make you happier!
Team Brainstorm
As they grow in their careers, your hairdressers will probably develop some really unique tips or sales techniques. For example, some hairdressers may find optimal times to schedule their clients’ follow up appointments using your extensive online booking package. Why wait until the appointment is over when you can take advantage of that coloring downtime?
Every few weeks, host a roundtable discussion where hairdressers share some of their personal methods that tend to leave clients satisfied. After everyone has introduced an idea, hold a vote to decide which idea will become part of your store’s policy!
Pass the Bucket
Sometimes, the best way to boost morale is to head straight for the source: confidence!
Once a month, before or after store hours, give everyone a blank piece of paper and ask them to write down a compliment about one of their coworkers. It could start with “I admire” or “I appreciate.” Leave the slips anonymous and put them into a hat or bucket.
Then, have each person pull out a slip to read aloud. Ask them to speak directly to the person that the compliment is about. This not only boosts the complimentee’s mood but it creates warmth between them and the reader!
Two Truths and a Lie
If you’ve ever been to summer camp, you’re probably familiar with this get-to-know-you game that you could incorporate into a fun salon game to change it up.
The object of the game is to come up with three “facts” about yourself. Two of them are truthful and one is a lie. The more outrageous all three are, the better!
Each player states there three “facts” an someone has to guess which one is the lie. If you want to extend the game, turn it into a tournament! Each player that answers correctly goes head to head with other accurate guessers until there are only two players left!
The Blind Draw
The blind draw is a great way to enhance your employees’ communication skills. In order to play this game, you will need simple pictures of objects or settings, blank pieces of paper, writing instruments, and a surface to draw on.
Pair up your hairdressers and seat them back to back. Give one hairdresser a picture of a simple object or setting. Give the other something to draw on and with.
The object of the game is for one hairdresser to describe what they’re looking at without using any obvious words. For example, if the picture was of a snowman, they could describe the three circles and shapes used to form the body and face. They could not, however, use keywords like “carrot” or “coal” or “sticks.”
The other player is then tasked with recreating the picture solely going off of what their partner describes. Not only are the end results often hilarious, but this is a great way to see the communication styles of your employees! It also gives them a non-work environment to practice their teamwork and communication together.
